AI Posters vs Designed Posters

Why “Good Enough” Isn’t Always Enough

You’ve probably seen it lately.
People knocking up posters with AI in a few seconds and thinking,“Yeah, that’ll do.”
And to be fair… sometimes it does.
AI can create something that looks clean, modern and usable. That’s not the issue.
The issue is what happens when everyone starts doing the same thing.
Most AI posters look decent.
Nice lightingClear text Bit of contrast
Nothing wrong with them.
But they all feel a bit… samey.
That’s because they’re built from patterns.Same styles, same layouts, same kind of vibe.
Venues aren’t studying your poster. They’re glancing at it.
And if yours looks like everyone else’s, you’ve already lost that moment.
It’s not about looking good. It’s about being clear.
This is the bit most people miss.
A poster isn’t there to look pretty. It’s there to tell someone quickly:
Who you are
What you do
Why they should book you
AI can make something look polished.
It doesn’t understand your act, your audience, or where you’re trying to get booked.
That’s where proper design comes in.
AI plays it safe. Performers shouldn’t.
AI tends to average things out.
Safe colours Safe layouts Safe fonts
Nothing offensive but nothing memorable either.
And if you’re a performer, being forgettable is the worst place you can be.
A good poster leans into who you are.Your style, your energy, your lane.
AI doesn’t really do that. It just gives you a “version” of a poster.
Where AI actually works

I’m not anti-AI at all.
It’s great for:
Quick ideas
Rough concepts
Getting something together fast
If you just need something and you’re not too bothered, it’s fine.
But if you’re actually chasing gigs, sending enquiries, and trying to stand out…
“Fine” isn’t enough.
The real difference
AI is about speed.
Design is about intent.
That’s it.
Anyone can generate a poster now.Not everyone can create one that actually works.
Bottom line
AI isn’t going anywhere.
Use it. Learn it. It’s a tool.
But if your promo:
Looks like everyone else’s
Feels a bit generic
Isn’t getting replies
It’s probably not your singing.
It’s how you’re being presented. If you’ve read this and thought “mine probably needs updating”…
you’re probably right.
