Why Great Singers Still Struggle To Get Booked

6 min read

I've lost count of how many times I've heard it. "I'm a better singer than them."

Sometimes they're right.

In fact, a lot of the time they're right.

Over the last twenty years I've worked alongside singers, tribute acts, duos, bands and entertainers at every level. I've seen incredible performers struggle to fill their diaries while average performers seem to be constantly busy.

At first glance it doesn't make sense.

Talent should win, shouldn't it?

Unfortunately, that's not how the entertainment industry works.

Being a great singer is important. Without talent you've got nothing to build on.

But talent alone isn't what gets you booked.

If it was, every incredible singer would be fully booked every weekend and every average singer would be sat at home.

The reality is very different.

The performers getting the most singer bookings are usually the ones who make it easiest for buyers to say yes.

And that's where singer promotion and entertainment marketing become so important.

Being Good Is No Longer Enough

Years ago, if you were one of the strongest singers in your area, word would get around.

Venue owners talked to each other.

Agents shared recommendations.

Musicians knew who was worth booking.

Today, everybody has access to everybody.

A venue owner can find hundreds of singers on Facebook before lunchtime.

Wedding couples can spend an evening comparing dozens of entertainers.

Agents receive enquiries every single day from performers looking for work.

The amount of choice available to buyers has exploded.

That's created a problem.

Being good is no longer your advantage.

Being good is simply expected.

Think about it from the venue's point of view.

If ten singers contact them this week, they're not arranging auditions.

They're not analysing vocal technique.

They're not comparing who can hit the highest note.

They're looking for reasons to shortlist people quickly.

Who looks professional?

Who appears reliable?

Who already looks like they're working regularly?

Who has made it easy to see what they do?

That's the reality.

Whether we like it or not, buyers make decisions quickly.

If your online presence doesn't help them make that decision, they'll move on.

People Buy Confidence, Not Talent

This is probably the biggest lesson I've learned in entertainment.

People don't buy talent.

They buy confidence.

A wedding couple isn't thinking about vocal placement or breath control.

They're thinking:

"Can we trust this person with our wedding?"

A venue owner isn't thinking:

"Can this singer sustain a note for eight seconds?"

They're thinking:

"Will this act turn up on time, sound good and keep my customers happy?"

An entertainment agent isn't thinking:

"Who is technically the best singer?"

They're thinking:

"Which act can I confidently put in front of my client?"

Confidence is everything.

That's why presentation matters.

It's why professional photography matters.

It's why branding matters.

It's why a professional showreel matters.

Not because those things make you a better singer.

Because they help buyers believe in you before they've met you.

The truth is that most people will decide whether they're interested long before they hear your full set.

Your Promo Material Is Working While You're Sleeping

A lot of performers still think promotion only matters when they're actively looking for work.

It doesn't.

Your promo material is working twenty-four hours a day.

Potential clients are checking your Facebook page.

Watching your videos.

Looking through your photographs.

Comparing you with other acts.

Reviewing your social media.

All while you're doing something completely different.

I've seen singers spend thousands of pounds on equipment but refuse to invest in a professional showreel.

That makes no sense to me.

A new speaker won't generate enquiries.

A better microphone won't generate enquiries.

A strong promotional video for singers absolutely can.

Your promo material is often the first impression people get of you.

And first impressions are incredibly difficult to change.

The Biggest Mistakes Singers Make

I've seen the same mistakes over and over again.

Poor Quality Videos

This is number one by a mile.

A video filmed on a phone from the back of a noisy pub isn't helping you.

You might know you sounded great.

The viewer doesn't.

They hear crowd noise.

Glasses clinking.

People talking.

Distorted audio.

Shaky footage.

You've accidentally made yourself look worse than you actually are.

No Professional Showreel

This one amazes me.

Some singers send fifteen separate video links and expect a venue manager to sit through all of them.

They won't.

Nobody has that kind of time.

A professional showreel gives people everything they need in a couple of minutes.

It's one of the most effective forms of singer promotion available.

Outdated Photos

If your profile picture is from six years ago, it's time for an update.

People want to know who they're booking today.

Not who they were booking in 2019.

Inconsistent Branding

One logo on Facebook.

Another on Instagram.

Different colours everywhere.

Different styles of graphics.

No clear identity.

You don't need a huge brand strategy.

You just need consistency.

Relying On Word Of Mouth

Word of mouth is brilliant.

It's also unpredictable.

Some of my busiest years came from recommendations.

Some of my quietest periods came immediately after.

Referrals are fantastic.

But they shouldn't be your only marketing plan.

What Venues And Agents Actually Want To See

This is where performers often overcomplicate things.

The people doing the booking aren't looking for perfection.

They're looking for reassurance.

They want to see quality performance footage.

They want to hear clean audio.

They want to see audience interaction.

They want evidence that you're active.

They want confidence that you'll represent their venue or event professionally.

Most importantly, they want to find all of this quickly.

If somebody has to dig through three years of Facebook posts to find a decent video, you've already made life harder than it needs to be.

The easier you make the decision, the more enquiries you'll receive.

The Performers Getting Booked Most Often

Let's imagine two singers.

Both can sing.

Both have experience.

Both can entertain a crowd.

Singer A has a few mobile phone videos, some old photographs and an inactive Facebook page.

Singer B has a professional showreel, quality photography, good branding and a strong social media presence.

Who gets more work?

Almost always Singer B.

Not because they're more talented.

Because they're easier to buy.

That's the part performers often miss.

Getting booked isn't just about ability.

It's about reducing risk for the buyer.

The more confidence your promotional material creates, the easier it becomes for somebody to hire you.

How To Improve Your Chances Of Getting More Bookings

The good news is that most performers don't need to completely reinvent themselves.

A few improvements can make a huge difference.

Get A Professional Showreel

If I could only recommend one thing, this would be it.

A professional showreel works harder than almost any other marketing asset you'll ever own.

Invest In Better Video Content

Good audio.

Good lighting.

Multiple angles.

Professional editing.

These things matter.

Not because they're flashy.

Because they represent you properly.

Update Your Photography

Professional photographs instantly improve perception.

People judge what they see.

That's human nature.

Improve Your Social Media

Make it easy for people to understand:

Who you are.

What you do.

What you sound like.

How to book you.

Think Like A Buyer

This is the biggest one.

Stop looking at your promotional material as a performer.

Look at it as somebody spending money.

Would you book you?

If the answer isn't an immediate yes, there's probably work to do.

Conclusion

I've worked with enough performers to know that talent isn't usually the problem.

There are brilliant singers everywhere.

The issue is often presentation.

The singers getting booked consistently aren't always the best singers.

They're the easiest singers to trust.

They've invested in professional promotion.

They've invested in visibility.

They've invested in making life easy for the buyer.

If you're struggling to generate the number of bookings you think your talent deserves, take an honest look at your promotional material.

Because the thing holding you back might not be your voice.

It might be everything surrounding it.
